"Sointula" by Bill Gaston + $15.95 Each of us has events that have shaped our lives, taken us from the path we were on and detoured us, gathering us up in a rip tide and depositing us somewhere previously not on our life map. This is the basis for Bill Gaston's novel "Sointula", named for a small island on the westernmost coast of Vancouver, Canada. Gaston's main character, Evelyn, is with her former lover and father of her son at his deathbed, an event that sends her on a journey not unlike that taken by Janie Mae Crawford in Zora Neale Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Evelyn travels around Vancouver by kayak (we come to realize it is one of those "don't try this at home" activities) and in doing so, meets a variety of characters. Her travel is as much inward as it is outward, and she learns as much about herself and her capabilities as she does about the other inhabitants of this wilderness. Part nature novel (whales figure prominently in the novel) and part picaresque novel, Gaston's "Sointula" is all good. You'll be glad you rode the wave!

ANYSOLDIER.COM People have different and extreme opinions about the war, and I can try to understand all of them. But I can't say I side with any position that's anti-soldier. My brother is in his 20s. I'm in my 20s. Anyone who volunteers to fight is keeping us one person further from a draft, which means it's keeping my friends and my brother away from fighting. I am incredibly grateful. As such, I have been hoping for a Web site like Anysoldier.com: a site that connects people with soldiers' wish lists for care packages - things like wet naps and candy and magazines. The Web site simplifies what to send and to whom and where. Easy. A care package seems like a very small tribute to people who keep my friends and family removed from the immediate affects of war. If you feel the same way, you might appreciate this site as well. - MG
