Krav Maga martial arts center reopens in new mid-island location

On Monday, the Krav Maga Training Center of

Nantucket opened in its new location at 150 Old South Road, welcoming Nantucketers of all ages to get fit and feel confident.

The center began in 2000 with children’s programs under former owner John Hallett. When the Hallett family moved to Colorado in October, the business was purchased by Steve Tornovish who is running it as a cooperative with five instructors.

Krav Maga is the Israeli selfdefense system and is widely used in law enforcement training for police departments across the country, said Logan O’Connor, the center’s business manager. Part of the center’s mission is to strive for strong minds and strong bodies.

When Hallett started the center at 57 Meadow View Drive he taught Tae Kwon Do to children. When he decided to expand his offerings he brought in four adults, including O’Connor, who was a student of Krav Maga, and marketed the program.

“We wanted to find a different type of training that is good for your body,” she explained. “Krav Maga is a body workout that is focused on street reaction and mental health and well-being. If you know what to do that comes across and you may never need to use physical self-defense.”

Besides self-defense training, the center has about a dozen other programs, such as some cardiooriented exercises, kick boxing, tone and sculpt classes, kettle and cardio bell workouts, a boot camp style program and mixed martial arts for children.

The center is membershipbased for patrons four years old to 75, with the average participant 25 years old. It is a year-round center. Before Hallett left there were approximately 100 adult members and 60 children enrolled. A new instructor who is a first degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do has been holding children’s workshops, but youth year-round classes will resume May 23.
