      NATIONAL GRID SEEKS RATE INCREASE National Grid has filed a request with the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunications and Energy for a new rate to cover the cost of the second cable system that serves Nantucket Island. The new 31-mile submarine cable system began operating in April 2006; the original cable system that also serves the island was placed in service in January 1997.

The Lighthouse Keeper
      An off-island story this week caught our attention. It was about a deer; a deer with, broadly speaking, seven legs and other features not common to a single animal. According to the news reports, such a beast was discovered in the woods of Wisconsin.

I ON THE COURT Nantucket Court Report
      Two of the local teenagers arrested Dec. 13 on multiple felony breaking and entering charges were back in District Court on Monday and had their cases continued to Jan. 8. Adam Jenkins, 17, of 51 Miacomet Avenue, has been held on probation detention since the daytime building break-ins and Monday the judge set a $1,000 cash bail on his new charges.
