1 p.m. Karttunen lecture “From Constantinople and India, the finest and most superb curiosities ever seen in this country.” The Nantucket Historical Association presents a series of educational programs with Dr. Frances Karttunen, the author of the Other Islanders: People Who Pulled Nantucket’s Oars. The program includes two gallery talks in the museum and an evening lecture. Dr. Karttunen’s book is for sale in the Museum Shop. She will be available to sign copies after each of her presentations. Also in the Island Home gallery, Dr. Karttunen will talk about the Armenian merchants who set up shop on Petticoat Row in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, selling fine rugs and exotic home furnishings for Nantucket’s new summer “cottages.” Whaling Museum, 13 Broad St.

8 p.m. Linda & Martha Greenlaw The Egan Institute of Maritime Studies presents Linda and Martha Greenlaw. Linda Greenlaw, author of three New York Times bestsellers: “The Hungry Ocean,” “The Lobster Chronicles,” and “All Fishermen are Liars,” will be sharing recipes from the new book she co-wrote with her mother, Martha Greenlaw. In their book, “Recipes From a Very Small Island,” Linda and Martha team up to present a slew of New England-style dishes using such regional staples as berries, fresh seafood and hearty vegetables. Their recipes range from hearty and homey dishes like “Martha’s Famous Lobster Casserole” to fresh and unique creations like “Spicy Swordfish Steaks with Cool Cucumber-Cumin Concoction.” A reception and booksigning by the authors will follow. 8 p.m. Karttunen lecture Dr. Karttunen will present “Faraway Neighbor Islands,” an illustrated talk in Gosnell Hall about the presence of Pacific Islanders on Nantucket during the whaling era. On display in the Whaling Museum is the sign for the Canacka Boarding-House where many of them resided. In 2001 and again in 2002, Native Hawaiians visited Nantucket to chant for the souls of the Pacific Islanders who had the misfortune to die on Nantucket, half a world away from their own island homes.
