11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A Sailor’s Walk During the whaling days many of Nantucket’s sailors and trades-men, who worked on the whal-ing ships, established homes on Union Street. Today one can take a stroll down this street and see 23 “typical” Nantucket historic houses. This year The Nantucket Garden Club will present five recently restored and redecorated historic houses as part of this year’s 51st House Tour. In addi-tion to touring these homes, tick-et holders will be able to visit the Nantucket Basket Museum and its recently planted 1820’s style garden American troubadour, Bill Schustik will be performing his ballads of the high seas throughout the day in the garden of 20 Union St. where the recep-tion tea and Boutique will be held. Tickets may be purchased at each of the houses on the tour day of tour or at advance during the week. Tickets $40.

6 p.m. Annual Life-Savers Recognition Day At its annual Life-Saver Recognition Day The Nantucket Life-Saving Museum will honor Nantucket native, Justin Dunham. Dunham was selected because of his courageous rescue of a swimmer, who had been swept away from the shore by strong currents, generated by heavy surf off Madequecham Beach in September 2004. Dunham’s selfless act has recently been recognized by both the Massachusetts Humane Society and the Carnegie Hero Fund. The awards ceremo-ny will be held at the Museum, 158 Polpis Road. Tickets are available at the Museum (open daily 9-4) or at the Egan Institute of Maritime Studies at the Coffin School on Winter Street and at the event, but space is limited. 8 p.m. Native American Architecture The Nantucket Historical Association presents an evening lecture with archaeol-ogist Mary Lynne Rainey. Rainey will examine Native American family and community structures from five different archaeological sites on the island. Archaeological sites investigated by the Public Archaeology Laboratory, Inc. on Nantucket provide valuable insights on Native American domestic and institu-tional architecture. 6 to 8 p.m. Old Spouter Gallery Artist Reception The Old Spouter Gallery will host an artist reception, featuring the recent works of noted local artist M.J. Levy Dickson. Dickson will present “26 Views of Sankaty Head Lighthouse,” which focuses on hourly perspectives of the local landmark. Representative works of other Artists of the Gallery will also be on exhibit.

7 p.m. Great Films from Great Books “October Sky,” rated PG. In 1950's min-ing town called Coalwood, Homer Hickam is a kid with only one future in sight, to work in the local coalmine like his father. However in October 1957, everything changes when the first artifi-cial satellite, Sputnik goes into orbit. With that event, Homer becomes inspired to learn how to build rockets. With his friends and the local nerd, Homer sets to do just that by trial and a lot of error. Unfortunately, most of the town and espe-cially Homer's father thinks that they are wasting their time. Only one teacher in the high school understands their efforts and lets them know that they could become contenders in the national science fair with college scholarships being the prize. Now the gang must learn to perfect their craft and overcome the many prob-lems facing them as they shoot for the stars. With community help, HFH intends to help qualified Nantucket families obtain a perma-nent and affordable home.
