The Art Colony on Nantucket: 60 Years of Contemporary Art

Featuring art, artifacts, and photographs from the Artists' Association of Nantucket's Permanent Collection, the exhibit tells the story of figures like Frank Swift Chase, Ruth Haviland Sutton, C. Robert Perrin, Philip Burnham Hicken, Pat Gardner and Sybil Goldsmith and reveals their role from 1945 to the present. This exhibit will run until Oct. 10, 2005. Rug Hooking, with Sandra Cheverie

The Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will offer a full array of programs focusing on Nantucket's rich tradition of historic decorative arts and crafts in the newly restored 1800 House, 8 Mill Street. The art of rug hooking is centuries old and one of America's indigenous folk arts. Class fee, including materials: NHA member, $225; nonmember, $275 (Advanced registration required.). Decorative Painting Demonstration, with Christina Wiggins, 1p.m.-3 p.m. Christina Wiggins will demonstrate decorative paint finishes so admired in the nineteenth century. The Nantucket Civic League will host its monthly Public Forum on Monday, July 11 at 4 p.m. in the cafeteria at Nantucket High School. Dr. Robert D. Ballard- Adventures in Deep Sea Exploration

The Egan Institute of Maritime Studies is proud to welcome Dr. Robert D. Ballard, oceanographer and underwater explorer, to Nantucket as its speaker to kick off the 2005 Summer Super Series at the Unitarian Church on Orange Street. Dr. Ballard's lecture topic, Adventures in Deep Sea exploration, is a chronicle of ocean exploration as seen through the eyes of one of the most recognizable figures in underwater exploration. Ballard will highlight key events such as the discovery of the Titanic and discuss cutting edge technology being used today to bring scientists on board ships into science classrooms around the world via satellite and internet technology.
