NHS hockey benefit this weekend
Hockey moms host tournament at Nantucket Ice
     Perhaps in the next election season politicians should be courting hockey moms, rather than their soccer sisters. Four stick-and-pucks mothers are behind this weekend's eight-team hockey tournament to benefit the nascent Nantucket High School club hockey team, which will begin play this winter.

Whalers set for season Home opener this Friday
     Before the Whalers soccer team got down to regular season business yesterday at Bourne, the squad had its preseason to polish off. The team traveled to Cape Cod Academy for an 11-on-11 tournament on Thursday and then took on a hodge-podge group of Nantucket Adult Soccer League players on Saturday at the elementary school field.

NHS plays Nauset, looks to Cohasset
2005 season kicks off Saturday, home opener on Sept. 17 against North Shore Tech
     The 2005 Whalers football team finally got a chance to play against someone else on Saturday. After six days of practice, the varsity and junior varsity squads rolled out versus Nauset on Saturday in controlled scrimmages at the Cape school.

The Black-Bellied Plover
     It was winter and we were walking a beach near Ilan on the island's northeast coast. The Pacific waves were crashing to my right - sand dunes with beach grass to my left. I was electrified to hear a whistled call, "Whee-oh-weeee," the accent on the ascending final note and suddenly I was transported back to Nantucket in my mind. I looked up and glimpsed a gray bird rocketing past heading south, but I already knew what it was - a Black-bellied Plover.
