HDC approves wind turbine

By Peter B. Brace

The Historic District Commission approved a wind turbine for private use on Nantucket at its weekly meeting last night.

Bartlett's Ocean View Farm will put up a wind turbine 169 feet tall from the ground to the top of its rotors that can generate 250 kilowatts to help pay Bartlett's electricity bills for its farm stand and the rest of the farm's power needs. The Unitarian Church on Orange Street is 106 feet tall from the ground.

Residential wind turbines are permitted by the town's wind turbine bylaw, Section 139.21 of the Town Code, for the LUG-1, LUG-2, LUG-3, R-10, R-2 and RC-2 zoning districts. Those over 60 feet high require special permit from the Planning Board with its guy wires more than 15 feet or more from the property line and its based protected by fencing.

All commercial wind turbines owners must secure a special permit from the Planning Board, which rules on their height and number on each lot. Commercial wind turbines are permitted in the LUG-1, LUG-2, LUG-3and RC-2 zoning districts.
